John Anderson Purvis died on December 21, 2024, at the age of 82. He was a great American lawyer.
In 1985, John was a founding partner of the firm that has become Purvis Thomson, LLP. John’s commitment to excellence was demonstrated by his professional accolades. He is one of just three Colorado lawyers who were admitted to all four of the elite law organizations: International Society of Barristers; International Academy of Trial Lawyers; American College of Trial Lawyers; American Board of Trial Advocates. He took leadership roles in all of these organizations.
He had been a Chair of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Trial Lawyers. He also chaired the Committee on Conduct of the United States District Court for Colorado, the Litigation Council of the Colorado Bar Association, and the Colorado Public Defender Commission.
He was a graduate of Denver’s North High School, Harvard University, and the University of Colorado School of Law. Long ago, he was named “Outstanding Young Lawyer” by the Colorado Bar Association. In 1978, John stepped into briefly run the Colorado Public Defender’s Office.
In November 2018, John and his long-time law partner Bill Gray, were jointly awarded the University of Colorado, School of Law’s highest alumni honor, the William Lee Knous Award. The award was made by Colorado Law in recognition of John and Bill’s long history of service to the University of Colorado and longtime outstanding reputations in the Colorado’s legal community.
John was listed in every edition of The Best Lawyers in America, since the publication was founded in 1989. He was also named frequently by Best Lawyers, as “Lawyer of the Year,” in Denver and Boulder, in various plaintiffs’ personal injury categories.
Our hearts go out to his dear wife, and to his family and friends, his academic and law colleagues. John set the gold standard for compassion, advocacy, and ethics. He will be missed here in the firm that he founded. But, his vision, his passion, his heart, and commitment to excellence, will live on here as long as the doors are open for business.
